The reorganization sees Markel’s U.S. and Bermuda businesses, formerly operating under the Markel Specialty brand, divided into two distinct divisions. The first, US Wholesale and Specialty, is entrusted with managing all U.S. specialty insurance products, distributed through both the company’s wholesale and retail channels. At the helm of this division is Wendy Houser, an accomplished leader with 16 years at Markel, previously serving as chief wholesale officer and a board member of the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association. Her experience and strategic acumen are expected to steer the division towards more streamlined operations and competitive positioning in the market.

The second division, Programs and Solutions, encompasses a broad spectrum of business lines, including personal lines, Bermuda operations, surety, workers’ compensation, and Insurtech, among others. Leading this division is Alex Martin, who transitions from his role as president of Markel Specialty. With 19 years at Markel, Martin brings a wealth of experience across operations, underwriting, business development, strategy, and finance, positioning him as a pivotal figure in executing Markel's realigned strategic goals.

Markel's management reshuffle extends beyond divisional changes, reflecting a broader alignment between leadership and operational strategy. Andrew McMellin, formerly head of the International Wholesale division, succeeds Simon Wilson as president of International. McMellin’s prior experience includes significant roles at Pioneer Underwriters and XL Catlin, endowing him with the expertise to manage global specialty insurance portfolios effectively. New to the chief commercial officer role is Glenn Harris, who will collaborate with trading partners to nurture strategic relationships. His previous tenure as managing executive of Global Distribution Strategies and Business Development at Markel highlights his capability to enhance business partnerships. Additionally, Henry Gardener steps into the chief risk officer role, where he will be pivotal in overseeing the company’s risk management framework. Gardener’s extensive background in legal and risk management within Markel ensures robust oversight in navigating the company’s complex risk landscape. This organizational transformation is central to Markel’s commitment to aligning leadership roles with its broader operational and strategic goals, ensuring a clear focus and enhanced responsiveness across its business sectors.
